FINALLY!!! December is here.

Hey :)

The last month of the year is finally upon us. I am relieved that it is almost the end of the year because if I am being honest I'm getting tired of sitting be hide a desk the whole day. I need a break from the office environment. Don't get me wrong, this was a very productive learning experience for me but I have not had a single day off work this year. The only time I was not at work was when we went in for our academic blocks and it not as if those were off days. I'm just saying that a I need a much needed break from the office environment.

Other than that there has not been much work at the office for us students to do. The firm is at the point in the year where they are rounding off projects and getting them into a completion stage. I as a student does not know what is needed for these projects so they place the projects in more capable hands. This is however my last week at the firm so I'm glad in a way that I don't have that much work to do, because if I did there would be a rush to complete the projects before the offices close on the 21st December.

This week I will be trying to get as much information as I need which would help me in third year. The stories I have heard about how hard and difficult third year is has got me a little worried but I not worried about that too much. All I'm focused on this week is to get all the info I need for 3rd year and trying to get through my last week which seems to be longer than the whole year combined...lol

This might be my last academic post for the year so in concluding I would just like to say that this was a very successful learning year for me as I have gained vasts amounts of knowledge. I was a worthwhile experience that I will always remember.

Till next time. Have a good one. :)

Weekly Post

Hey :)

This was not a very busy week for me. I am starting to finish off this one project, The Pastorie, which is in its final stage of turning the old structure into a museum. We are just waiting for the clients to clear it with its council members becuase this is a project for a church. They have to finalise the plans and then we can send the plans to heritage so that they can approve that the addtions are in accordance to the standards and regulations. I've been told however  that heritage council can be quite difficult, so fingers crossed that this will not take longer than it should. Other than this project I was helping in between with other projects to speed up the process of which ever project they were busy on.
This week I was feeling like my 2nd year is over and that now that I dont have to go to class anymore I want the my work year to just finish to that I can move on hopefully to next year. At the momment it just feels like time is going by so slowly now that it is coming to the end of the year, Im not as exited as I was in the beginning of the years with regarding my work practice. HOWEVER, I dont regret this year at all as it has tauwt me a lot in this year in terms of architecture and I have greater experience and feel for architecture and what is required to be an architect.

Have a good on. Peace :)

Getting back to Bussiness

Hey :)

This was a week I was not looking forward to, getting back into the working environment was going to be difficult. Working in a very hands on and practical environment, to sitting behind a computer all day, every day. But I soon became use to it again, it was like I never left. I thought that when I returned that work would be lowded on my me to make up for the two weeks I missed. This however was not the case as there was not that much work to do. This week I continued working on the Pastorie and it is getting to its completion stage. Other than that I was helping out with other work in and around the office.
The feeling of this week compared to last week is a big difference. I wish I was back at Elgin working on site with all my friends, I cant wait to be back in class next year. I miss the feeling of being a student, I know I will regret what I just siad as I hear 3rd year is tough. Im sure I will manage though, if I pass this year of course...

Till next week Have a good one :)

BLOCK 3

Hey :)

The last block week was a very fulfilling and successful project week. It was great seeing all my friends again. It was a very educational and great learning experience. As new architects we do not know how much work it is to do renovations and build on site. It has made me think twice about what I write on a plan the next I do additions, I have a new found respect for the construction business. I learned a lot from this experience, the methods one needs to take to ensure that you achieve the correct design as the plan states.

When the design was finished it looked beautiful, the satisfaction from building your own design is a great feeling. It looked amazing and because we made it ourselves it just made it look that much better. It was a great site to see when we showed it to the school, the children were so happy to see it. It was a warming experience to see that we as a class have down something good for the less fortunate. I hope that in the future there will be more projects like this, it is an experience that I will always remember.

Till next time :)

Weekly Post

Hey :)

This week was not much happening, so my post will be short and sweet.

The only thing worth mentioning this week was when I went on site visit. It was the old heritage building which I mentioned in a previous post. We had to go see at which part of the structure was part of the original structure and which was new brick work. This is achieved by taking away strips of plaster to destinguish between the different types of bricks used. This was a useful site visit for me as I learned a lot from it on how one should treat a very old structure. I also learned that this is a very long process and that to restore a structure as old as this one is a very stringint and patience process.

Thats all this week. Have a good one.

WEEKLY POST

Hey :)

This week there was not much that happened, it was another peaceful week. Not that I had nothing to do, the work just was not that demanding. Monday -Wednesday I had redraw a drawing that was done in 2002 becuase the drawing could not be found. I had to draw the plan from a printed out copy that was printed in 2002. For the elevations I had to draw from scratch because they were not on the printed out copy. All I had as a reference were the pictures on the printed copy but they were thumbnail sizes, very small and hard to compare and get a base point. I however did manage and was able to complete the drawing for council submission.
Thursday I went on a site visit with one of the senior architects at the firm. We went to a old cape dutch style house where it was going to be turned into a museum keeping most of the existing house in tact. Due to the fact that this is not the first time that the house would be renovated, the contracter had to chip away the plaster at certain areas of the house to see whether or not the new renovations would interfere with the existing structure. We had to make sure that the wall would be strong enough to take on new renovations otherwise the wall would calapse. This was a very important step as we wanted to prserve most of the heritage of the house as we could.
Friday (today) I had not much to do as my boss is not in today. This gave me time to work on my academic paper for Monday which will make my weekend a little more relaxed.

That all for this week till next time. Have a good one :)
