Hey :)
The last month of the year is finally upon us. I am relieved that it is almost the end of the year because if I am being honest I'm getting tired of sitting be hide a desk the whole day. I need a break from the office environment. Don't get me wrong, this was a very productive learning experience for me but I have not had a single day off work this year. The only time I was not at work was when we went in for our academic blocks and it not as if those were off days. I'm just saying that a I need a much needed break from the office environment.
Other than that there has not been much work at the office for us students to do. The firm is at the point in the year where they are rounding off projects and getting them into a completion stage. I as a student does not know what is needed for these projects so they place the projects in more capable hands. This is however my last week at the firm so I'm glad in a way that I don't have that much work to do, because if I did there would be a rush to complete the projects before the offices close on the 21st December.
This week I will be trying to get as much information as I need which would help me in third year. The stories I have heard about how hard and difficult third year is has got me a little worried but I not worried about that too much. All I'm focused on this week is to get all the info I need for 3rd year and trying to get through my last week which seems to be longer than the whole year combined...lol
This might be my last academic post for the year so in concluding I would just like to say that this was a very successful learning year for me as I have gained vasts amounts of knowledge. I was a worthwhile experience that I will always remember.
Till next time. Have a good one. :)

Weekly Post
Hey :)
This was not a very busy week for me. I am starting to finish off this one project, The Pastorie, which is in its final stage of turning the old structure into a museum. We are just waiting for the clients to clear it with its council members becuase this is a project for a church. They have to finalise the plans and then we can send the plans to heritage so that they can approve that the addtions are in accordance to the standards and regulations. I've been told however that heritage council can be quite difficult, so fingers crossed that this will not take longer than it should. Other than this project I was helping in between with other projects to speed up the process of which ever project they were busy on.
This week I was feeling like my 2nd year is over and that now that I dont have to go to class anymore I want the my work year to just finish to that I can move on hopefully to next year. At the momment it just feels like time is going by so slowly now that it is coming to the end of the year, Im not as exited as I was in the beginning of the years with regarding my work practice. HOWEVER, I dont regret this year at all as it has tauwt me a lot in this year in terms of architecture and I have greater experience and feel for architecture and what is required to be an architect.
Have a good on. Peace :)

Getting back to Bussiness
Hey :)
This was a week I was not looking forward to, getting back into the working environment was going to be difficult. Working in a very hands on and practical environment, to sitting behind a computer all day, every day. But I soon became use to it again, it was like I never left. I thought that when I returned that work would be lowded on my me to make up for the two weeks I missed. This however was not the case as there was not that much work to do. This week I continued working on the Pastorie and it is getting to its completion stage. Other than that I was helping out with other work in and around the office.
The feeling of this week compared to last week is a big difference. I wish I was back at Elgin working on site with all my friends, I cant wait to be back in class next year. I miss the feeling of being a student, I know I will regret what I just siad as I hear 3rd year is tough. Im sure I will manage though, if I pass this year of course...
Till next week Have a good one :)

BLOCK 3
Hey :)
The last block week was a very fulfilling and successful project week. It was great seeing all my friends again. It was a very educational and great learning experience. As new architects we do not know how much work it is to do renovations and build on site. It has made me think twice about what I write on a plan the next I do additions, I have a new found respect for the construction business. I learned a lot from this experience, the methods one needs to take to ensure that you achieve the correct design as the plan states.
When the design was finished it looked beautiful, the satisfaction from building your own design is a great feeling. It looked amazing and because we made it ourselves it just made it look that much better. It was a great site to see when we showed it to the school, the children were so happy to see it. It was a warming experience to see that we as a class have down something good for the less fortunate. I hope that in the future there will be more projects like this, it is an experience that I will always remember.

Weekly Post
Hey :)
This week was not much happening, so my post will be short and sweet.
The only thing worth mentioning this week was when I went on site visit. It was the old heritage building which I mentioned in a previous post. We had to go see at which part of the structure was part of the original structure and which was new brick work. This is achieved by taking away strips of plaster to destinguish between the different types of bricks used. This was a useful site visit for me as I learned a lot from it on how one should treat a very old structure. I also learned that this is a very long process and that to restore a structure as old as this one is a very stringint and patience process.
Thats all this week. Have a good one.

WEEKLY POST
Hey :)
This week there was not much that happened, it was another peaceful week. Not that I had nothing to do, the work just was not that demanding. Monday -Wednesday I had redraw a drawing that was done in 2002 becuase the drawing could not be found. I had to draw the plan from a printed out copy that was printed in 2002. For the elevations I had to draw from scratch because they were not on the printed out copy. All I had as a reference were the pictures on the printed copy but they were thumbnail sizes, very small and hard to compare and get a base point. I however did manage and was able to complete the drawing for council submission.
Thursday I went on a site visit with one of the senior architects at the firm. We went to a old cape dutch style house where it was going to be turned into a museum keeping most of the existing house in tact. Due to the fact that this is not the first time that the house would be renovated, the contracter had to chip away the plaster at certain areas of the house to see whether or not the new renovations would interfere with the existing structure. We had to make sure that the wall would be strong enough to take on new renovations otherwise the wall would calapse. This was a very important step as we wanted to prserve most of the heritage of the house as we could.
Friday (today) I had not much to do as my boss is not in today. This gave me time to work on my academic paper for Monday which will make my weekend a little more relaxed.
That all for this week till next time. Have a good one :)

WEEKLY POST
Hey :)
This week was a week that was filled with work. The Aan de Weber project had to be completed for the clients to review the units they would be buying. Leading up to today was a very stressful and hard working week. We had to complete units before today in order for us to give a good presentationt o the client. This would of been not that much work to do, but becuase we are still waiting for the hard drive to return from Cape Town we had to use back up drawing files of the unit types. This meant that the units were not up to date with the latest changes. Units with the a drawing title of A had to be I, drawing titles with B had to be D etc. After making sure that we had all the neccessary units and they were correctly named we were able to update the drawing to the what would have been the latest drawings. The problem with these unit type Auto CAD drawings was the lines of the walls... There were lines that were not straight and its not major that you can see it, they were minute so I would have to zoom in and out trying to delete lines that are not suppose to be there. This had to be done otherwise when it came to hatching the walls it would not hatch. The most frustrating thing about all these drawings was that they were done by an archtitect at the firm. One would think that an architect with some experience would know how to draw up a proper drawing.
After correcting all the lines I was able to work more productively. After this it was a continuous crit process with every sigle drawing, changing this changing that until the senior architect was satified. This continued till this afternoon, it has been a hard and long week. Luckily for me we are able to watch the rugby in the firm which made my day a lot better being a big Springbok supporter. That was a hard game thank goodness we were able to hold out to the end.
Till next Firday, have a good one :)

WEEKLY POST
Hey All :)
This week did not have much going on at the firm. Our work drive, K Drive, is still being fixed and has yet to come back to the firm. As a result my post this week will be short and will not contain much. All I did this week was work on residential units for a development near James Town. The name of the settlement is called Aan de Weber and will consist of multiple housing units of different sizes. I had to adjust the plans according to what the director wanted at our firm. Other than that the only other thing worth mentioning is that we are allowed to watch the rugby at work. This made the working environment much easier... OK, with the rugby on not much work was done but when it was finished it was back to work.
That's all for the week, have a good one. :)

...There is still a problem
Hey
This past week we were not able to work from our complete K Drive as it is still being fixed in Cape Town. There is however a temporary drive set up so that we are able to work from some of the work that has been uploaded before the K Drives hard drive was sent off to Cape Town.
With all that said I hadn't had much work to do at practice this week because of the accessibility of the work that we need from the K Drive. The Only work I did do was continue working on a sketch up model which I thought I would finish in the middle of the week but only finished by the end of the week. I had some complications with sketch up as some of my faces did not want to create surfaces and they were just lines. I did not know what was wrong because from what I could see the lines were connected. After many frustrating attempts at trying to connect the lines I would eventually give up and redraw whatever I was trying to connect. I eventually discovered that the Auto CAD drawings that I imported into sketch up did not have straight lines. This was confusing to me because all the lines of the drawing in Auto CAD were straight but when I imported them to sketch up they didn't line up. These lines were out by a millimetre or less because it was not evident in the drawing. I asked a colleague of mine and he told me that if you import drawings from Auto Cad into sketch up you have to make sure all the lines are straight otherwise they will not line up if you had to construct a model in sketch up. Even if the lines are out by a single millimeter they will not create a face in sketch up. I was told to rather then drawing from Auto CAD drawings it is better to measure the drawings and construct it in that manner. This way you ensure that the lines in sketch up are straight and that the model is being built or constructed in the correct manner. This is vital because if we had to hand it to the graphic designing team, it makes there jobs a lot easier as it makes the rendering of faces much easier.
That is all for this week, not much work but enough to get through the week.
Till next Friday , PEACE and have a good one :)

Houston, we have a problem!!!
Hey :)
This week we had a problem with our network. It all started with the weekend before when they were installing a new network so that things at work could run more smoother. Everyone thought that they would be done with it over the weekend but as it turned out, it wasn't. This meant that the K drive where all the firms projects are saved could not be loaded or accessed by anyone in the firm. This was a big problem as no one was able to work. This carried on till Tuesday and then when Wednesday arrived they were able to load certain projects that needed to be completed on the K drive. This gave me some work to do as I had to do some chages to a heritage building which was being transformed into a museum. They however were not able to load the entire drive as there was still a problem. The hard drive of the K drive had to sent to Cape Town so that all the files could be recovered, now the firm is patientlly waiting for the return of all the files. Hopefully it will arrive early this week so that the firm can get back to its working ways.
Till next time. Have a good one :) GO BOKKE!!

ITS THE WEEKEND BABY...
Hi All
This past week at office was not very hectic in terms of the amount of work we had to do. The whole week Myself and Aubrey were working on a housing development in the James Town area. The drawings consisted of different unit types, site plans and 3D Sketch Up models which had to be completed for today (Friday) for a 12 o'clock meeting with the client. Myself and Aubrey had to work on the unit type drawings which were drawings of plans and elevations on Auto CAD.
As 12 o'clock meeting was approaching we were rushing to get everything done so that we were not late for the meeting. It was a bithectic having to do so much in a short space of time. We eventually got all the things together in time for the meeting and when it was over the architect commented us on doing and getting all the work in on time. It was also good to hear that the client liked the work that was put forward by us as a firm. All in all it was another good review and a good day at the office.
Till next Friday have a great weekend. Peace!!!

Back at work
Hey people.
So it was back to work this week after the week at Tech. The transition from going to class and back to work was not easy. I was as almost I had not left work, they just carry on giving you work like we had to catch up on the week we missed. I had to get use to things again in office the week at Tech had me more in a relaxed mood. It is amazing how a week off can change your work rhythm but after the first day back at work I was sorted.
This week I was working on different projects. I was working on the Franschoek retail development plan, helping senior architects with the municipal submissions. I also worked on a housing development in Somerset West, adjusting the plans of the unit to clients specification for a meeting which took place today.
Other than my work at the firm this week was actually much more relaxed now that we did not have to deal with the Tech projects and the projects at the firm. It was a much need break after hours of the work to just have a relaxing evening.
Till next time. I'm out. PEACE:)

End of Block 2
Hey :)
We finally got ot go back to class this week. During the year it felt like this block took forever to arrive, now that it has past it feels like we are nearing the end of the year and I cant believe how quickly it gone past.
It was great going back to class and meeting all my friends and china's again and catch up on things. It was nice to be able to explain to someone the situation your in because they are going through the same thing. As far as class work is concerned it was good that we were able to get feedback on ours years work through face to face consiltation. Having to constantly be looking at a computer screen all day Im sure is not good for you. It was also a refreshing change of scenery from sitting in a office, with almost no windows, all day. This I think this was a much needed break from our work place just so that we don't get completely bored at work having to do the same thing everyday of the week.
This was a good academic week for us because it gave us a better understanding of our future work as well as an indication of where we stand in terms of our progress.
It was great seeing you guys again. Hope the wait for block 3 is not as long as block 2...
Au Revoir!!

This week was an average week for me. It wasn't really very hectic at work but the work kept me busy throughout the day. I started on the Blue Downs project again because the Franschoek retail developement projects was given to senior architects at the firm. The project was at the stage where municiple submissions had to be drawn up for the developement which would take too long if I personally had to do it because the deadline would not be made. I personally feel relieved that I am not doing the submission because it would leave a heavy burden on my shoulders and do not want to be held resposible if anything goes wrong. At this stage I wouldnt be able to handle the preasure but Im sure with a little more experience I would be able to handle big situations like the Franschoek project.
On the Blue Downs Project we had to update the sketch up models because a few changes were made to the plans. I had to export images of the interior of the unit I was responcible for any place them with the correct unit. This was for the purpose of presentation so that the client can see and get a feel of how it would be inside the unit.
Half way through the week I was asked to help with another project where I had to correct the existing marketing plans for council. I had to set aside the Blue Downs project to complete this task.
That was my week, not much going on but it kept me busy. Till next time.
Arrivederci :)

Like The Old Days....
Hey.
This week was a continuation of the Franschoek Development plan. I was still busy putting in the walls of the structure because it has to be prepared for municipal submission. This week was more hectic than last week because I had another employee at the firm and another senior architect working with me. The partner I was busy with haded it down to them because he was busy with another project. This week was like a crit week, it felt like I was back at campus having a crit session with all the lecturers. It was question, after question, after question and why this why that. There was a lot of pressure on me to make sure that my drawing was correct it was nerve recking. There were some measurements that were not there even doors, I felt so undermined. This was a good learning experience for me because I learned that when one goes to site to do extensions on a existing structure, you have to take in all aspects of the of the structure. Even if your asked to only look at some aspects, you need to take all of it in so that you have no dought in your mind about what has to be done.
That was it this week which felt like I was back at campus.
Cheers :)

Relax, taking it easy.
Hey :)
This week I was busy with the Franschoek Retail Developement plan. I had to convert the block plan into a working drawing which en tales putting in all the structural elements of the structure. I am currently still busy with this becuase it only has to be in next week so I'm just cruising. Other than that this week was not very busy for me, I had to do some class work after work which kept me busy but it wasn't that hectic. Overall I enjoyed this week because it was not that hectic.
Thats all I have to share, so PEACE!!!
Have a great weekend. :)

Weekly Update
Hey hey.
This was a week that did not have much work because my boss was on holiday. I only had a few things to clear up with some sketch up models that I completed on Wednesday. On Thursday myself and Aubrey would have gone on a site visit in Franschoek but we coundn't due to the works driver being busy. Today we went on to Franschoek to the site of the Retail Developement which would take place. We had to measure the heights of the existing structure (steel frame structure) as well as measure the beam profiles. I thought that the site visit would be a refreshing change of face and it was... for 1 or 2 ours. It was very tiring after a while and I wish that I was back in the office but all in all it was a good learing experience.
During the week we had someone come do there job shadowing at the firm. He was in Grade 11 intrested in studing architecture. We were able to give him some good advice becasue we had people still studying as well as myself who is still studying so we were gave him the in and outs of studying architecture.
Thats was my week, and to those of you that have holiday... I hate you. lol!
Have a good one. PEACE!!

Hi all :)
Last week was not that interesting because not much happened at work. I had to compile booklets for clients comprising of sketch up models in j-peg format with plans and proposed layouts and unit types. These booklets were for the Blue Downs Nuwe Begin low cost housing project. Myself and Aubrey had to build up the sketch up of the units but the units only comprised of the exterior facades of the units just to give the client an indication of how the specific unit type would look like. After the booklets were completed we then had to do all interior aspects of the units; the walls, furniture, stairs, balustrades, doors, sanitary ware and cupboards. This had to be down to all 11 units which I thought would not take that long... but because the computers at work are not exactly top notch, it takes much longer to complete a unit due to the constant lagging of the hardware. BUT...before I could start on this, one of the partners at our firm asked me and another colleague to complete a sketch up model and print it out to compile a presentation booklet for the NEXT DAY. My colleague and I were very frustrated with him because we were already working on other projects and then suddenly he expects us to complete this for the next day. We put our frustrations aside and completed the booklet just in time to present to the client. I guess when push comes to shove anything is possible.
Now back to the interior aspects of the unit types. After many frustrating moments we completed the interior of all the units. On top of all of this I had a party in a club during the week too... but that is a story I won't share...:)
I guess the week was actually more hectic then I thought...

End of week
Heya.
End of yet another week. This week I had to work on the Franshoek developement plan and we are at the stage that we have start drawing in the walls of the developement. I learned something new in the process in the design by using the structure to hide things like down pipes so that it does not in terfere with the aesthetics of the structure. Other than that the highlight of this week was yesterday, the public holiday. It was a great day, sleeping late under a nice blanket. Today I'm sitting in office regreting that I didnt take this day off so that I can have a long weekend. There is almost no one at work, most of the senior architects took the days leave to have a long weekend. But I guess I will just have to get through the day but time is not on my side, it seems as if time goes slower and slower.
Till next time...adiós amigos

What a chilled week...
Hey All.
Sorry for the post being a bit late... well a few days late. It was a bit hectic on Friday for me but I'll get to that.
I started this working week with no work to do because we had just complted the sketch up models for our Blue Downs Nuwe Begin project (low cost housing) which would be shown to the client. So I decided to organise my classwork to pass the time. Tuesday was when I started to do work but it was not very complex stuff, just drawing up some plans of a house that is still in its design phase. I was also working on a project about a retail developement in Franschoek where I had to do some adjusments to the developement. Wednesday I completed the plans of the house then I had to do some adjustments to a unit type which I previously did in the Blue Downs Nuwe Begin project and then had to built a sketch up model from scrath and had to be partly furnished. Thursday I started with the sketch up model and I had all day to finish it because the deadline was for the next morning.

Friday I had to help with some admin, creating PDF's and printing them out so that it could be submitted on Monday. Because of all the admin that I had to do at work I had no time to post my class work at work so I then had to post it at home where I just manage to stick to the deadline of Friday.
So last week was I think was a more relaxed week for me in terms of the work I did previously. Until next time...
...Arrivederci!

Long Time no see...
hey :)
Sorry for not posting the last two weeks have been quite busy and everytime I have free time it just slips my mind.
This week was a sketch up week for me as I had to build house from Auto CAD plans to a 3D model in sketch up. It was however a very relaxed week because of the public holiday and because the boss was out on business. The holiday was mcuh needed but the next morning was a struggle to get out of bed. The last two days of the week we went to a site in Franschhoek to measure up for one project. We were there all day because it was a Agrimart store plus the warehouse where they store everything. It was a very tiring day. Today we had to draw the place in Auto CAD and all Im waiting for is the clock to hit 17:00 to be free.
This day is taking SO LONG...
Have a great weekend. Cheers :)

Short Week...
Hey
This week was a very good week as I had almost nothing to do thanks to the public holidays. But as I sit here in the office I am wondering if I shouldnt have taken my leave so that I have a week of holiday. There is hardly anyone at office and it is very quiet and boring. I had work this week because I have to complete drawing that have to be submitted so that they can figure out the pricing of the building. It only has to be in next week Tuesday but since Monday is a public holiday I have to complete them before the weekend. I think that I should enjoy this time I have of minimal work becasue when next week comes it is back to working hard. One thing I do enjoy about coming to work this week was that I got my paycheck which has made my day a better one.
Have a good long weekend again...
Cheers

OMG...what a month.
Hey Everybody
The month of March and start of April was a very hectic month as we had to hand in 1407 drawings to municipality. This was a very long and stressful prtoject and I am GLAD to be done with it. We had to print aproximatly 20 pages for every single drawing consisting of A4 forms and A3 plans. So if you do the math we altogether approximatly printed more than 28000 sheets of paper and that is only the correctlly printed sheets. We probably printed 1000 error sheets which we had to correct afterwards.
The most frustrating thing is when you think you are finished with one section of work and it is completly printed out and then you find one thing wrong that has to be chenged in the at whole section. I hated my life at these pionts in time but it was a good learning experience where you are able to realise your own mistakes and then correct them.
This work was a lot of repetition and after all this work Im sure I will never forget what is needed in a municiple drawing. I would also like to apologize for the lack of blog reports, as you can see in the pictures below, I was very busy so please understand.
Hope you guys have a fun week a head.

LONG WEEKEND...
Hey
My work has not changed from my last blog. Only thing that happened that was different was that I went to measure up on site. That was a better than sitting all day starring at a computer screen.
Other than that not much has happened so I hope you all have a great long weekend and enjoy it respocibly.
Cheers.

BORING WEEK...
Hey.
I am still busy with the 1400 low cost houseing project. So this week I dont have much to report back to you.
The work has stated to bore me because it is a lot of repetition as you can imagine. I almost fell asleep one time... luckily I didnt otherwise I would have been in trouble.
This project will still take some time so my reports on the blog will not change much for at least three weeks.
Till next time have a great week end.

End of two long weeks.
Hello.
I will start off by saying sorry for not posting a blog last week. I was very busy with a project and particular sections needed to be completed so once again, sorry.
In the past two weeks I have been very busy at work with a low cost housing project which entails close to 1500 houses. For every single unit there has to be a municiple submission. So as you can imagine its is a lot of work. So far we have only completed 181 municiple submissions and we had to print them out 3 times for each unit. If you do the math that is 543 A3 sheets of paper plus we still had to had in five forms for every erf plot. In total that amounts to more than 1000 sheets of paper needed for 181 out of 1500 unit. As you can see I have a long road a head of me...a very long road.
Thats all I have for this week til next time. Cheers

So it has come to the end of another work week. Now that my 'grace' period is officially over at the firm I am being intrusted with more projects. Its a big change to get use to becasue Im am working on more than on project. One moment Im on this project then I need to draw up plans for another..., and so it goes on. It is starting to get hectic with projects having to meet deadlines. One project I have to do is a low cost housing project which has I think more that 500 units and every single unit has to be submitted to the municipallity. As you can imagine this will be a long, long, LONG project. All in all its all good fun and it is a great learnig expereince.
Thats all for this week and I hope you all have a great Valentines day.
See you guys next week. Peace.

Hi All
Firstly I would just like to say it a awesome getting your first pay check.
In my second week at work I was getting more involved with the projects at the firm not as in the first week where I just worked on Sketch up. It is actually a good feeling knowing that you are contributing to a building a makes you feel like your part of the team. Thats what makes it very easy to work here (Dennis Moss & Partners) because the people are so friendly, kind and are always willing to help you.
Im sure at the moment that I am just being let off the hook in terms of how much work I recieve and have to do. I am trying to enjoy the free time that I have now because I know the work is going to get heavy, REALLY HEAVY.
Peace. :)
